Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
The fire safety regulations changed in October 2006. The new Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 emphasises the prevention of fires and the reduction of risk, and makes it the property owner's responsibility to ensure the safety of everyone who uses or visits their premises and the immediate vicinity of the building to ensure the risk of any fire spreading to adjacent buildings is reduced.
A Fire Risk Assessment is now required for all premises where there are 5 or more persons employed with a few exceptions. There are no exemptions for volunteers as they are classed as employees under the regulations.
A written Emergency Plan must also be produced to ensure the safe evacuation of everyone from the building including visitors,contractors and those people with any disability who may be vunerable and particulary at risk during a fire or other emergency a written PEEP (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan) will be required.
The premises Fire Safety must also be properly managed and will include:
1.The weekly testing the Fire Alarm and redording the results.
2.Testing the Emergency Lighting and recording the results.
3.All Fire Extinguishers and fire supression systems are serviced and maintained annually and a certificate issued as evidence.
4.A statutory Evacuation of the building is carried out periodically to ensure everyone can exit the building within 2.5 minutes and anyone with any disability will be assisted from the building to the Assembly Point and without using the lift.
The Regulations state that it is the responsibility of the employer or the person who has control of the building to organise the evacuation Drills.
The responsibility for the enforcement of the regulations will be carried out by the Local Fire authority (LFEPA in London) London Fire Brigade. There is a London Fire Brigade fire safety team which serve each borough in London. Visit www.london-fire.gov.uk via the links page

There is a choice of morning 09.30 - 12.30 or afternoon courses 1.30 - 4.30.
The Fire Marshal Training Course fee is £55 per delegate and a certificate will be issued to each delegate as evidence of attendance. Fire Marshal training courses may also be delived on site at your workplace with times to suit. The Fire Marshal training course is designed to empower staff to ensure the safe evacuation of your premises and to fulfil their role as a Fire Marshal in the event of a fire or any other emergency.
A trained Fire Marshal will also assist with fire prevention and the general management of fire safety within your building. This will generally promote a good fire safety culture within your organisation on a daily basis.
